Seychelles Coral Reef Restoration

El calentamiento global y la acidificación de los océanos ejercen una gran presión sobre los arrecifes de coral de todo el mundo. Debido a estas presiones inducidas por el hombre, los corales están experimentando lo que se llama "blanqueamiento de los corales". Este fenómeno causa que los corales expulsen a las algas que viven en simbiosis con ellos, que le confieren color y les proporcionan la mayor parte de su nutrición. Sin las algas, los corales exponen su esqueleto blanco y se quedan sin el importante suministro de nutrientes que necesitan para sobrevivir. Dos eventos importantes de blanqueamiento ocurrieron en Seychelles en 1998 y 2016. Esto causó la muerte de hasta el 90% de todos los corales en Seychelles.
Afortunadamente, organizaciones como Marine Conservation Society Seychelles (MCSS) están tratando de salvar los arrecifes locales monitoreando el área y utilizando los datos para establecer áreas marinas protegidas. Sin embargo, la protección pasiva no es suficiente para mantener los arrecifes vivos y saludables. Con el apoyo de las empresas locales, MCSS ha establecido viveros de coral tanto en tierra como en el océano. Aquí, se cultivan fragmentos de coral resistentes al calorpara que puedan ser trasplantados de nuevo en los arrecifes afectados.
Seychelles Coral Reef Restoration (El proyecto de restauración de arrecifes de coral de Seychelles) te acerca directamente a la hermosa biodiversidad marina de Seychelles y también muestra lo que perderemos si no abordamos el calentamiento global y otras presiones antropogénicas sobre el medio marino.
Cyan Planet siempre está feliz de apoyar a creativos jóvenes como Sam Desmet. Sam es un biólogo marino que trabajó en el MCSS durante la producción del proyecto Seychelles Coral Reef Restoration. De abril a junio 2019, creó el documental y se estrenó en la exposición Mar Motto 2019 en Faro, Portugal, y también lo presentó durante la conferencia Diving into marine minds 2019 en Brest, Francia.

He is a marine biologist who worked in the Marine Conservation Society Seychelles during the production of Seychelles Coral Reef Restoration.
